The Complete Dress Size Guide: How to Find Your Perfect Fit — style guidance from Zalinae.

How to Find Your Perfect Dress Size

Sizing varies between brands, countries, and even different dress styles within the same brand. Rather than going by the size you've always bought, measuring yourself and consulting a size guide is the most reliable way to ensure a great fit. This guide explains exactly how to measure and what to do with those measurements.

How to Take Your Measurements

You'll need a soft measuring tape (the fabric kind used for sewing — not a stiff metal tape measure). Take all measurements while wearing the undergarments you'd wear with the dress.

Bust

Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape parallel to the ground. Don't pull it too tight — you should be able to breathe normally. Note this number in inches.

Waist

Measure around the narrowest part of your torso, typically about an inch above your belly button. This is your natural waist, not where your waistband sits. Keep the tape snug but not tight.

Hips

Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, typically 7-9 inches below your natural waist. Keep the tape parallel to the ground.

When Between Sizes

If your measurements fall between sizes, here's how to choose:

  • Bodycon and fitted styles — size up for comfort and ease of movement
  • Wrap dresses — size down (the adjustable tie accommodates variation)
  • Flowy and A-line styles — go with your largest measurement (usually hips)
  • Structured styles (crepe, ponte) — size up for a cleaner fit
  • Jersey/stretch — can typically size down as stretch accommodates

Fit Tips for Common Dress Styles

Maxi dresses: The most important measurement is hip (for the skirt) and bust (for the bodice). If the dress has a defined waist, waist measurement matters too.

Bodycon: Hips are usually the determining factor. A bodycon should be snug but allow comfortable movement.

Wrap dresses: Bust measurement is key — the wrap must close comfortably at the chest.
